Mercedes-Benz G-Class Returns to Its Off-Road Roots
The luxury off-road vehicle harkens back to its military past with a number of performance improvements, including:Mercedes-Benz will expand its U.S. G-Class lineup in 2017 with the release of the G550 4X42.
  • Portal axles – Unlike a conventional axle, portal axles allow for axle input and the wheel center to be two drastically different heights, creating 17 inches of ground clearance.
  • Three 100% locking differentials – By locking front, center and rear differentials in Low Range mode, each wheel will spin at the same RPM, thus directing torque to the wheels which are able to obtain traction. The G-Class is able to move forward even if only a single wheel is able to gain traction.
  • 4.0L Biturbo V8 Engine – Featuring a 4.0-liter Biturbo V8, the G550 4X42 produces 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque for exemplary on- and off-road performance.
Descended from a military vehicle, the G class premiered in 1979, and more than 250,000 Gelaendewagens (German for "off-road vehicle") have been sold worldwide since. The G550 4X42 will be available at Isringhausen and other U.S. dealers by early 2017.
